Scribe, 10/7/2013 period 5
Hey everybody, so today in class we first went over the new SAT 7 words, had a peer review or essays, and then we took notes on ethos, pathos and logos. (which are advertising methods) When we went over the SAT 7 words we went around the class and read them out loud, like normal, and this week we have to know the parts of speech, synonyms, definitions, and spelling. We do all of the exercises for the lesson except for exercise 5.When our peers reviewed our essays, we went through and dissected each part of the essay. By this I mean we went through the outline of the essay and made sure that each part was there. In order to check your own essay, make sure you do all of your quote citations right. Example. "blah"(Shakespeare, 5.6.89-99). Make sure the period is AFTER the second paranthesis. The order of the numbers in there is act, scene, lines. Also make sure that the heading of your paper is correct. (which you can find on my Friday post) Just go through your essay and make sure that it follows the outline which can be found on Mrs. Smith's teacher page in the daily power point. Also, make sure that the very first thing of your intro is a quote, so many people didn't follow the outline, and that is what it begins with. So, "If you don't see a quote first, your probably on the wrong track."- Smith. Ethos- they have to do with showing athletes, and figures that everyone knows. Smith gave the example of Peyton Manning doing the Papa Murphy's commercials. Pathos- Has to do with emotion. I think of the ASPCA commercials with that sad lady named Sarah holding the dog and trying to get you to donate money. If you don't know what I'm talking about, It's the commercial that always makes you cry when it comes on. Logos- these are based off of fact numbers and percents and facts. The notes for these subjects can also be found on Mrs. Smith's teacher page. Thanks for reading, I hope this has been insightful! Also, if you missed because you're sick, we hope you get better. If you weren't sick, we hope you had an awesome doctor/ortho appointment. Have an awesome Monday!

Scribe, 10/4/13 period 5
In class on Friday, We took the SAT 6 vocab test, and we went over our in class essays and our conclusion paragraph for the essay. The SAT test was a wanted poster that you created with three other people for Mrs.Smith. The wanted poster had to include a picture, name of the villain (smith), aliases, why she was wanted, who to contact if found, and a reward. In your group you had to include the 15 vocab words on the poster in the right context.(antipathy, elucidate, bedlam, peruse, eschew, banal, imminent, obdurate, affluence, scurrilous, parody, sedulous, onerous, amoral, and denouement) We had about 20 minutes to do this and we got to use markers. We went over the order for the *body paragraphs really quickly to understand what we were supposed to be writing. We then went over the conclusion paragraph, and Mrs.Smith showed us how to get a citation of Othello form easy bib.
For Citation:
Your name
English 9 honors
Smith-3
7 October, 2013
For Citation:
- Find the ISBN number on the back of your Othello book. (on the bottom right corner in the white box)
- Then click on the book option above where you would enter a URL on the easy bib website.
- Type in the second ISBN number on your book, not the first! (of course if you only have one number, use that one)
- When options come up click on the 2004 version of the book. Use the citation it gives you.
- You can then click the export or print button, and scroll down to the save to google docs and it will automatically save the citation in your google docs document.
- Its is supposed to be really short, use the power of words.
- You never introduce any new information.
- Summing up your already given info, restate your thesis saying what you proved.
- Review all of your points and for the last couple of sentences trace it back to your "attention getter"(quote) at the beginning of the essay.

10/3/13
- Begin Writing in class essay.
- Hand back Othello act 4 quiz, SAT 5 quiz and exercises, and rubric for act 4 Reader’s Theater.
- Talk about thesis. Examples of attention getter (quote) and explanation. We went over the transition to background and what not to do (Othello is about...).
- We asked questions about background and the attention getter. Mrs. Smith said to keep the background general with the big idea and pointed out that the attention getter should be a quote.
- The outline of the introduction should always have these points: attention getter, explanation of attention getter, transition to background, background information on the text, and thesis (always one sentence, always at the end of introduction).
- Body Paragraph.
- We clarified that we will only have 1 topic sentence.
- Outline before you write.
- Mrs. Smith’s example, “Thou toldst me thou didst hold him in thy hate” (Othello 1.1.6), as an example of jealousy. Smith pointed out that you need to know enough context to the play so that the reader knows what’s happening. Don’t put too much information in this, because you will then be breaking down and explaining the quote in an explanation. After this explanation you need to connect to the thesis, and then transition to the next point.
- The quotes don’t have to be in a chronological order, but each point has to lead to the next.
- After this, we shared and critiqued the thesis statements of the person next to us.
- Finished Othello act 5 quizzes.
- Once we finished the quizzes, we worked on our essays.
Homework: SAT 6 quiz and exercises, intro and body paragraph.
If you have any other questions, look at the agenda on her webpage.

Scribe- Oct 2- P5
Scribe- Oct 2 - Smith P5
We sang happy birthday to Eve and discussed Smith’s marathon (18th overall, 4th of women).
Looked at weekly powerpoint (on Arapahoe website)- EVERYTHING ON POWERPOINT
Began writing/discussing in class essay (thesis statement due by tomorrow)
In class essay:
Intro:
Attention getter: quote, hook
Transition to background: assume that reader has NO background info- give context, explanation, make it so ANYONE could understand
Background information on text: SMITH NEVER WANTS TO SEE BACKGROUND INFO THAT SAYS: “is about” : Ex: Shakespeare’s play Othello is about … etc. INSTEAD: portrays, demonstrates, delves into, etc.
Thesis: title, author, restate and answer a question, and a why: THIS IS WHAT SHE WANTS BY TOMORROW: one sentence, ends intro paragraph, includes above info, states stance on essential question (for Othello- pick ONE of our themes: prejudice, power of imitation, gender, jealousy, honesty, power of words, anger, racism, betrayal, revenge) with a WHY. Ex: Ex: William Shakespeare’s Othello exemplifies the hold jealousy has over societies’ lives through the consummate betrayal of Desdemona by Iago and Othello.
- This is Smith’s thesis- you need to create your own.
-whole slide of strong verbs on weekly powerpoint
Body Paragraph (only 1 paragraph):
(see powerpoint)
Prove your thesis
- Topic sentence: point from thesis:
- Set-up first example-
- Lead-in, "quote" (Shakespeare, ).
- Explanation:
- what does the quote say
- connect to the point of the paragraph-
- connect to the thesis-
- Transition to next example
- Lead-in, "quote" (Shakespeare, ).
- Explanation:
- what does the quote say
- connect to the point of the paragraph- topic sentence point
- connect to the thesis-
- Transition to next example-
- Lead-in, "quote" ((Shakespeare, ).
- Explanation:
- what does the quote say
- connect to the point of the paragraph- topic sentence point
- connect to the thesis-
- Concluding sentence
and that is all we talked about!! we have to have our thesis statements ready by tomorrow.
Scribe 10-2, Period 3
The notes underneath the slide (Introduction, verbs, thesis, body paragraphs, concluding paragraph) we went over today.
We’re writing essays that respond to the question To what extent does jealousy/betrayal rule our choices/lives or affect our relationships? But instead of all doing that same exact question you get to choose a word to substitute-for jealousy and betrayal- from the main ideas we hung around the classroom: revenge, betrayal, racism, anger, power of words, honesty, jealousy, gender, power of intimidation and prejudice. ONLY ONE
In-class essay:
- Attention getter (topic sentence-connects back to thesis)
- Transition to background (Ex: Jealousy rules the lives of not only citizens in this day and age but also characters in Othello.)
- Background information on text (synopsis, dvd/ book covers)
- Thesis: title, author, restate and answer question, and a why (one sentence, straight to the point, strong verbs ie. exemplifies)
Thesis:
- Titles, authors, restate and answer question, and a why
- Ex: William Shakespeare’s Othello exemplifies the hold jealousy has over societies’ lives through the consummate betrayal of Desdemona by Iago and Othello.
- This is Smith’s thesis- you need to create your own.
Body Paragraph:
- Topic sentence: topic sentence-connects back to thesis
- Set-up first example-
- Lead-in, "quote" (Shakespeare, 4.1.23-24 ).
- Explanation:
- what does the quote say
- connect to the point of the paragraph-
- connect to the thesis-
- Transition to next example
- Lead-in, "quote" (Shakespeare, ).
- Explanation:
- what does the quote say
- connect to the point of the paragraph- topic sentence point
- connect to the thesis-
- Transition to next example-
- Lead-in, "quote" ((Shakespeare, ).
- Explanation:
- what does the quote say
- connect to the point of the paragraph- topic sentence point
- connect to the thesis-
- Concluding sentence: restate thesis, but not exactly
All the explanations have to relate to Othello only and each explanation has to have a quote from the book. You can give away the ending in the explanation part but not in the opening paragraph. We’ll be writing one paragraph with 3 examples.
Explain Examples:
1. Iago jealous of Cassio, quote
affects Othello
2. Iago tricks Othello into thinking Desdemona is unfaithful, quote
handkerchief
3. Othello’s rage= Desdemona’s death
Concluding Paragraph:
- Restate thesis: not in exact same words
- Review points made- what did you prove; state this succinctly
- Final thoughts (tie back to a specific quote or explain)
Then we had worktime for our introduction paragraph or you finished your Act 5 quiz if you hadn’t already.

Scribe, Period 5 for 9/27
Hi everyone, I'm sorry this is sooo late I was having a lot of problems with my Blogger account and I couldn't get it to post until today. In class today, we took the SAT 5 quiz in which you had to know synonyms, part of speech, definition, and spelling for each word. We then watched Act 4 in the Othello movie that we've been watching. We reviewed Act 4 going over what happened and the major points of what to remember before taking the Act 4 quiz in the end of the period. Once again I'm sorry this is so late, but that is what we did on Friday.
Scribe 10/2 Period 5
Today we finished reading and acting out Act 5 of Othello. In the part we read, Desdemona dies and Emilia scolds Othello for killing an innocent woman for something she didn’t do. He continues to argue that Desdemona was unfaithful. When he said that Iago told him that she was cheating, Emilia is initially surprised at her husband’s lies but continues to explain that none of Iago’s words were true. Iago, along with some other men, comes in and confesses that he told those things to Othello, but he tries to get Emilia to leave before the others realize he was lying to get his way. Emilia doesn’t stop revealing the truth so he stabs her and runs away. She dies singing next to Desdemona. After everyone leaves, Othello realizes what he’s done and is ashamed of it. He stabs Iago, getting revenge for the fatal lies he told. Then he and Cassio discuss what was actually the truth. Othello’s guilt then causes him to commit suicide.
After that we discussed the essential question (stated below) and took the quiz over Act 5. Homework is to complete the SAT 6 questions for Friday. Any questions you have on the SAT assignment will be answered tomorrow as well.
Essential question: To what extent do jealousy and betrayal rule our choices/ lives or affect our relationships?
