Scribe- Oct 2- P5

Scribe- Oct 2 - Smith P5

We sang happy birthday to Eve and discussed Smith’s marathon (18th overall, 4th of women).
Looked at weekly powerpoint (on Arapahoe website)- EVERYTHING ON POWERPOINT
Began writing/discussing in class essay (thesis statement due by tomorrow)
In class essay:
Intro:
Attention getter: quote, hook
Transition to background: assume that reader has NO background info- give context, explanation, make it so ANYONE could understand
Background information on text: SMITH NEVER WANTS TO SEE BACKGROUND INFO THAT SAYS: “is about” : Ex: Shakespeare’s play Othello is about … etc. INSTEAD: portrays, demonstrates, delves into, etc.
Thesis: title, author, restate and answer a question, and a why: THIS IS WHAT SHE WANTS BY TOMORROW: one sentence, ends intro paragraph, includes above info, states stance on essential question (for Othello- pick ONE of our themes: prejudice, power of imitation, gender, jealousy, honesty, power of words, anger, racism, betrayal, revenge) with a WHY. Ex: Ex: William Shakespeare’s Othello exemplifies the hold jealousy has over societies’ lives through the consummate betrayal of Desdemona by Iago and Othello.
  • This is Smith’s thesis- you need to create your own.
-whole slide of strong verbs on weekly powerpoint
Body Paragraph (only 1 paragraph):
